Inpatient Facilities and Related Hospital Departments

Introduction

The Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC®) credential recognizes expertise in inpatient facility coding. The coding in this course focuses on the services provided by the facility, not the physician services provided to inpatients. These services represent use of hospital resources, such as surgical suites, medical monitoring devices, recovery room time, and nursing services associated with procedures and services provided.

The procedure codes differ for inpatient and outpatient claims. ICD-10-PCS procedure codes are used for inpatient surgical procedures; CPT® and HCPCS Level II codes are used for the professional services performed by physicians and non-physician practitioners (NPPs) and outpatient facility services.

ICD-10-CM Diagnosis codes and their selection are generally the same for inpatient and outpatient claims, except for coding guidelines, which will be discussed later.
